The Brief.

Leeds-based Principles Agency approached the Gate to produce four 30-second TV Commercials for confectionary legends, Barratts Sweets. The commercials had to be exceptionally fun, energetic and upbeat and a true reflection of the Barratt Sweets brand, that their audience know and love.
Principles needed a visually-exciting film that would appeal to audiences across the generations – re-capturing the hearts of an older audience with the nostalgia of the true classics, and also inspire young people to explore these retro-licious sweet treats for the first time.

The Mission.

It was important that the audience could understand how these sweets could make you feel – to deliver this successfully we needed to source a diverse cast of actors who were authentic, delightfully kooky and relatable – just like the Barratt Sweets brand itself.
The real challenge came in matching these characters to the individual sweets, bringing each sweet to life in its own special way.

To take this concept one step further, Principles asked for subtle illustration and animated elements to be added in post-production to enhance each description even more.

What We Did.

The Gate carried out a 2-day casting to source our sweetie stars. After whittling down 90 hopefuls to 22 absolute gems, we then managed and produced a 2-day, sweet-filled shoot at our studio, The Foundry, led by the marvellous director, Morgan Hutchins.

Once post-production was well underway, renowned Manchester illustrator, Pete Obsolete, was brought on board to visualise the descriptions which Dock 10 then animated to bring to life.

The Result.

The ‘Make Sweet Memories’ national TV campaign launched on 8 March 2018, followed by online promotion across social media and digital channels. Check out Barratt’s social pages to see the positive sentiment from the audience across the board.
